WebPortage packs have two big benefits in my opinion. 1) you can carry a canoe more easily since it is lower on your shoulders. And 2) it's nice to easily keep the center of gravity in the canoe lower. You can with taller backpacks but it's easier to toss the portage pack in the canoe and keep it low.
